Union shop sign from a Kosher meat marker in New York City, made by Bastian Bros. Co., circa 1960s to 1970s. The sign is printed on a heavy cardboard sheet that is finished with a clear surface, and it is backed by another piece of heavy cardboard with a printed pattern. The sign is printed in black and red and has text on the front that reads: Local 234, International Kosher Union Market, This is to Certify that this Meat Market is conducted I accordance with the rules of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, AFL-CIO, Therefore we commend it to the patronage of all, Issued by authority of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, A.F.L. Condition for the use of the sign are printed in red below this, and the facsimile signature of Patrick E. Gorman, Sec.-Treas., appears to the left. The seal for the union is printed in gold at left. There’s a union label to its right, and the credit for Bastian is printed in the bottom margin at right. Gorman served as Secretary Treasurer from 1942 to 1976. There are two holes at the top edge with a string to hang this on a wall. I believe Local 234 was in New York City, and the sign likely hung in a Kosher deli there. This is from the collection of the labor historian Scott Molloy. The sign measures 10” by 14” and is in very good or better condition. There is no damage at all. This sign would look great hanging in your deli or even your kitchen at home! A nice bit of Jewish deli and labor union history!
