Item Details

Union shop sign from a barber shop or hairdresser’s salon, made by Bastian Bros. Co., copyright 1946. The sign is printed on a heavy cardboard sheet that is finished with a clear surface. It is printed in yellow-gold and blue principally and features a man and a woman shaking hands in front of a rising sun with the words C-I-O Unity at center. The two figures both wear light colored uniform type clothing. The words Union and Shop flank the seal for the union. That seal has the same illustration of the two figures at center with words around it that read Barbers & Beauty Culturists Union of America. The number 3833 appears at bottom. The text along the bottom margin reads: Copyright 1946—B.B.C.U. of A., Bastian Bros. Co., Rochester, N.Y. A union label follows at right. This sign would have been hung on the wall of a barber shop or hairdresser’s salon to show they supported labor unions. This is from the collection of the labor historian Scott Molloy. The sign measures just under 6 ½” by 9” and is in good or better condition with light to moderate wear and light soiling. Note the rubbing and bumping at the corners of the card, most notably at top right. The design is largely unaffected. This sign would look great hanging in your shop or even your bathroom at home! A nice bit of barber shop and labor union history!
