Advertising calendar for Vulcan Horse Nails and the Fowler Nail Co. of Seymour, Connecticut, with illustrations of race horses, printed by Kruger & Lehnhardt of New York, dated 1904. The calendar has Vulcan Horse Nails, The Fowler Nail Co., Seymour, Conn., at the top edge. It features an illustration of a horse set within a laurel wreath border with text that reads “Lou Dillon”, The Original 2.00 Trotter, Memphis, Tenn. Oct. 24, 1903, 1.58 1/2. Above this there’s an illustration of two horses pulling men in sulkies on a race track. Text below the horse at right reads Lou Dillon, Coming under the wire in 2.00 flat, Readville, Mass., Aug. 24th 1903. The text under the horse to the left reads Copyright 1903 By the American Horse Breeder Publishing co. There is a complete small calendar is glued over the picture at bottom center. On the left side, there’s a picture of horse shoe nails, and, on the right, a picture of a box and a crate of such nails. The text along the bottom edge reads For Sale by Eaton, Chase & Co., Norwich, Connecticut. Lou Dillon was a famous race horse, a Standardbred trotting horse. She would set these records in 1903, gain some fame, and go on tour in the U.S. and Europe. She was retired in 1906 and died in 1926. Lou Dillon was elected to the Harness Racing Hall of Fame in 1955. This poster came from a barn in North Stonington, Connecticut. It measures 10” by 15” and is good condition with only light wear and soiling. There is a spot of damage at top on the left edge (mouse nibble) and an odd crease in the card stock under the right horse at top right. Note also the light rubbing at the corners of the card. A nice early advertisement and a fun bit of horse racing history!
