This small needlework (possibly crewel work) on silk is dated 1836 and appears to be a memorial to a child, Johanes. There is a small round image in the center of a young boy hugging a sheep. Just below the picture, Johanes is stitched in tiny stitches and just below that 1836 (possibly the year it was made, or possibly the date of Johanes’ birth or death. The needlework measures 6 ½” x 8 5/8” and it is framed n a contemporary wooden frame measuring 7 ¼” x 9 3/8”. The stitching is complete, and only some light discoloration/staining on the silk and a bit of deterioration (does not impact any of the stitchwork) in the upper right. No indication of country of origin, but most likely German or Austrian. Not examined out of the frame.
