Item Details

George William Warren’s 1861 composition in memory of Col. Elmer Ellsworth of the 11th New York Volunteers, the first Union officer to die in the Civil War. Ellsworth was fatally shot after removing a Confederate flag flying over the Marshall House Hotel in Alexandria, Va. A close friend of President Lincoln and his family, Ellsworth clerked in the future president's law office in Illinois, and campaigned for Lincoln during the 1860 election. Powerful image of Ellsworth on cover (taken from a Matthew Brady photographic portrait), surrounded by vignettes from his military career. Published by Firth, Pond & Co. Six pages. Good condition; this is a disbound copy, hence the sheets were cut at top and bottom during binding. Measures @ 10 x 13 inches.
