Composer Henry Clay Work’s ‘Grafted Into the Army’ sheet music, published 1862 by Root & Cady, Chicago. Cover art of soldier’s mother holding “the trousies he used to wear” and an image of a soldier on picket duty. The song tells the story of a mother who learns that her youngest and only surviving son has been drafted into the army. Work used the word “grafted” to emphasize the idea that money was accepted as a substitute for wealthy men who might have enlisted. Six pages; very good condition; cleanly disbound; measures @ 10 x 13 inches. This is sheet is very hard to find outside of museums.
