Original 1886 certificate for the 25-cent purchase of a share in/sponsorship of The New Morning Star, the fourth ship of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Starting in 1856, five successive Morning Stars carried missionaries around the South Pacific. The ships were built and their missions supported by first 10-cent subscriptions from thousands of American Sunday school children, and subsequently as in the present case, 25-cent subscriptions. The artwork on the certificate includes a quote from the sixtieth chapter of Isaiah, “Surely the isles shall wait for me.” Aside from some crinkling/wrinkles at top center, the certificate is in very excellent condition.
