Autographed 6.5 x 8.5 inch photo portrait of Douglas Fairbanks Sr. (1883-1939), the 1920s “King of Hollywood.” Studio photo likely taken @ 1929. Fairbanks found success in Hollywood as a star of the silent screen, soon forming the Douglas Fairbanks Film Corporation. He later joined Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin and D. W. Griffith to form United Artists, and his film successes grew. A biography by John C. Tibbetts of the University of Kansas, at the online Encyclopedia of the Great Plains, says that beyond Fairbanks’ Hollywood success, he was “An influential businessman as well as a film celebrity, he helped found the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (serving as its first president), promoted the importation and distribution in America of international art house films like Eisenstein's Potemkin (1925), and encouraged technical innovations in the film industry like the Technicolor process (which he employed in The Black Pirate).” The photo is in very good shape.
