This pair of chromolithograph-on-canvas portraits of George and Martha Washington (after Gilbert Stuart) have lived their lives together as evidenced by the matching patina in the original gilt and gesso frames. Both pieces are stamped: "Entered According to Act of Congress in the year 1861 by E. C. MIDDLETON, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southern District of Ohio CINCINNATI." In addition, both pieces have the label from the same framer in Cincinnati. These 1861 versions may be his first editions as Middleton reprinted them several years later and added the words "Warranted Oil Color" to his stamped information which appears on the back of each canvas.
Elijah C. Middleton is considered one of the pioneers of American chromolithography and is particularly known for his portraits of American Presidents, politicians, and dignitaries. For more information, click here.
