When was the last time you saw a set of 12 silver lobster forks in a silk-lined, fitted presentation box?
This set was sold by H. Meyen & Co. in Berlin, Germany circa 1900. The hallmarks on each piece indicate these are .800 parts silver, the remaining .200 in various alloys added for necessary strength. The German crown and crescent moon hallmarks confirm the .800 parts silver. In addition, the hallmark of the maker, Vereinigte Silberwarenfabriken AG of Düsseldorf, is present.
The design, front and back, is identical and features the full body of a lobster. The pinchers encircle a cartouche which displays a rather generic monogram on one side only. It could be a 'B' over an 'R' or an 'S' over an 'L' - or almost any other combination of initials you wish.
The 12 forks together weigh 17.85 troy ounces. With silver trading at $29.57/troy ounce midday on January 13, 2025, these forks currently have a melt value of $422.00. Of course, we would never melt these, but the silver value has to be considered.
All are in excellent condition, each one 8" long. The presentation box measures 12-1/2" x 10-1/2" x 1-1/2"
