What an exceptional and lovely patent model! Anthony Abel applied for his patent of an "Improvement in Opera Chairs" in 1871, and on January 30, 1872 it was approved as Patent No. 123,140. Read through the attached copies of the patent obtained from the U.S. Patent Office and you will find it very interesting.
This piece was sold 12 years ago, in June 2013, Lot #3387 at James Julia Auctions (now Morphy). You can see the patent model in that auction by clicking here. Julia described the patent model as follows: " A pair of brass framed theater chairs with flip up velvet covered seats and arm rests. Mounted to wooden base. Accompanied by original patent and receiving tags. SIZE: 9-1/4″ w x 9-1/2″ h x 5″ d".
You will note in Julia's/Morphy's photos, there is a crack in the wooden base. Since then that little piece of wood has separated from the base and is lost. Otherwise, the patent model is in excellent condition, showing expected wear to some of the velvet and missing three tiny screws that secure one of the velvet-padded arm rests to its brass framework as three more screws that secure the back framework to the back of both chairs.
