Primitive carved wooden wall box in reddish brown paint, early to mid 19th century. The small hanging wall box is made of four pieces of wood. With the box opening, the front angles down from the back. The back has a heart shaped top with shapes cut into the edges and a hole at center for hanging it. The front has been crudely carved forming up and down ridges. I believe the wood is pine. The reddish brown surface is a bit odd. If I didn’t know the history of the piece, I might question the age. The remnants of a lime green paint in a few cracks and crevices also suggests this painted surface is old. The paint hides the tack or brad heads. This is from the collection of Sally VanDenBossche. My mother had this hanging on the dining room wall with clay pipes displayed in it. The box is just under 7” tall at the back, just over 3” tall at the front, just over 5” wide, and 3” at its deepest. The folk art wall box is in good to very good condition with the wear and soiling consistent with its age. I see no signs of significant damage—just one newer small chip on the front at top left. A nice piece of early American folk art!
