Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug with Applied Lizard, Signed "Chester Hewell," Ovoid Jug with Hand-Molded and Applied Clay Face including Kaolin Eyes with Cobalt Pupils, Eyebrows, Small Nose, Rounded Ears, Chin, and Mouth with Broken China Teeth. Head with Applied Lizard. Surface Covered in an Olive-Colored Alkaline Glaze. Excellent, Essentially As-Made Condition. Underside Incised with Chester Hewell Signature. Height: 9-3/4". Seven Generations of Hewells have Passed Down the Craft from the Pottery's Humble Beginnings in 1850 all the Way to Today, when Four Generations of Hewells worked Side by Side in the Gillsville Business, Ensuring that this Remarkable Line of Folk Potters Remains Unbroken.
