Item Details

Moses Soyer: (1899 -1974) Graphite and Crayon Sketch, “Nude In Mirror”, Signed Lower Left, M. Soyer, Image: 21” X 15” Overall in Frame 32” X 26” Condition: Very Good, Not Examined out of Frame. Moses Soyer was the twin brother of artist Raphael Soyer and the older brother of artist Issac Soyer. They were born in Czarist Russia in 1899 and came to the U.S. in 1912. Moses studied in New York City at the Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, the Educational Alliance and the Ferrer School where he was influenced by Robert Henri and George Bellows. After traveling to Europe on a fellowship, Soyer taught at several schools until The Depression made such teaching positions scarce. The Depression, in fact, set the mood for most of Soyer's art expression. The Works Project Administration provided him with work as well as the fellowship of other artists, but the era itself provided the social sentiments which permeate most of Soyer's work. Using some of the techniques of his favorite artists, such as Van Rijn Rembrandt and Gustave Courbet, he portrayed his subjects in the perseverance of hard work or in the uncertainty of unemployment. His works extends into the present Rembrandt’s warm, expressive, and humanistic portraits and interiors. Later in his career, Moses Soyer turned to the depiction of female figures, especially ballet dancers. His paintings remained popular throughout his life and can be found in major U.S. museums, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Moses Soyer died in 1974
