George W. Miller is documented as a potter in Strasburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia, 1881 through 1901, though it seems he was one of the less prolific potters in the region. This one-gallon jar is impressed just below the neck, "Geo. W. Miller Str. . . . ", his name and town encircled by an oval cartouche. (Note that below his name the impression of the full name of the town, Strasburg, is absent. See photos. ) The "1" signifying the jar's gallon capacity, is highlighted within a dotted or cogged circle. Wispy cobalt vines or leaves adorn the shoulder of the jar. Backside shows some kiln marks. There is one small chip (3/8" x 1/4") to the outer rim which you can see in the first photo, but it has been there for so long, it is attained nearly the same color as the rest of the jar. No cracks or hairlines. A nice example of northern Virginia pottery!
Measures: 9-1/2" tall x 7" diameter.
