Hand-wrought, these small and slender andirons with hearts were acquired from an advanced collector who kept minute details about each acquisition. Their notes indicate the purchase of these andirons was made on May 8, 1976 from the renown Roger Bacon of Exeter, New Hampshire, a specialist in primitive furniture and folk art. The collector went on in great detail to describe Roger Bacon's home as well as the "time forgot" adjacent cottage. After almost 50 years, what they described as an extraordinary encounter for a then-young collector has not been forgotten.
Made for a small hearth, these andirons are just 14" tall x 12-1/2" front to back. Each heart measures 1-3/4" wide x 2" tall and trail into a slender twisted stem ending in pointed penny or snake-head feet. The brass knobs are SOLID (not hollow) and each have a horizontal band around the circumference. They are affixed to the top of the hearts with a short but solid rod.
