A sentimental portrait of Lizzie Holladay, the daughter Mary Jane Boggs and Henry Thompson Holladay of Orange and Spotsylvania. Sadly Lizzie died while the artist was on his way to make her portrait. He was still able to capture a beautiful likeness. Mary Jane Holladay’s journal for this period still survives and offers an account of Lizzie’s passing and Elder’s visit.
It is signed at the lower right “J. A. Elder 1859” Elder was the most accomplished Fredericksburg artist of the 19th century. He trained in Germany with Emanuel Leutze and painted portraits of many famous Virginians of the Civil War era.

Shipping and Returns
We are happy to discuss preferences for shipping with every customer. Generally we will carefully pack small items ourselves and send them by USPS with the buyer paying the postage. For somewhat larger items we often go the UPS. For furniture we have worked with a number of different delivery companies. Being only ten minutes from I-95 and available for pickups 24-7 that is easy. No sale is considered final until we know the buyer is happy.Additional Information
We maintained a traditional antiques shop in the heart of historic Fredericksburg, Virginia for 42 years. Now we have moved to the cloud [really only a mile away and closer to the highway] and are continuing our business online, over the phone, and by appointment. If we were ever to specialize we would only handle things that might have seemed familiar to Washington, Jefferson, Madison and Monroe. But, we really enjoy a wide variety of quality objects.
